Comprehensive Hearing Tests Are Important For Hearing Aid Benefit
Better Hearing Depends on it
The outcomes of amplification and the benefits delivered by any hearing aid, are based on the very careful fitting of that hearing aid to you and your hearing loss. So, in order that you hear better and get the benefits of your hearing aids, we need to get a complete and clear picture of your hearing. Just pure tone audiometery is not enough to really understand what is going on with your hearing loss and how it affects you. Better hearing for you depends on an in-depth hearing test.
The Typical Hearing Test
The typical hearing test involves you responding to a series of sounds presented to you through a set of headphones and a bone conductor. This process is called pure tone audiometry. With the better understanding we have of both hearing loss and hearing aids, this test is simply not good enough. It doesn't really provide enough information to really understand your hearing needs.
Two people may have exactly the same hearing test results using audiometery, however, they may have radically different speech discrimination and understanding. Speech discrimination plays a large part in your ability to hear and understand speech especially in noisy envieonments.
The Hearing Test in Edinburgh
With all of this in mind, we offer a comprehensive hearing test at our centre in Edinburgh. The procedure involves the following tests;
Pure tone testing (Audiometry)
Speech testing (Audiometry)
Tympanometry
Acoustic Reflex Threshold testing
Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) testing
Speech Testing, an Important factor
Speech testing is an important pat of our process, it allows us to really understand the impact that your hearing loss is having on your understanding of speech. It also allows us to understand how your loss is affecting your understanding of speech in both quiet and noisy situations. It helps us to choose the best type of hearing aid technology for you and the best way to fit it.
Benefit For You
This in-depth testing procedure allows us to recommend hearing aids that will be of real benefit to you. That is why we deliver an in-depth hearing test at Edinburgh Hearing Practice.

My appointment with Katie was informative, professional and relaxed. She immediately put me at ease regarding the procedure I was about to have and advised me on the best earplugs to protect my hearing whilst playing loud music.
